Agriculture is nearly impossible without soil as soil is the source of plant life on earth.Keeping this in mind,we the students of University of Agricultural Sciences,GKVK, Bengaluru, celebrated World Soil Day on December 5th,2023 at Laginayakanahalli village of Shidlagatta Taluk.”Soil and Water;A Source of Life”, was the theme of this year’s Soil Day programme.

We started the programme with “Mannina Pooja”,the ceremonious worship of Soil.The Pooja was graciously carried out by the chief guests of the programme,Dr. Krishnamurthy, Professor and Project Head,All India Coordinated Research Project on Soil Test and Crop Response,GKVK, Bengaluru,Dr.Jayanthi, Assistant Professor, Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry,GKVK, Bengaluru,Sri Muniyappa,Village Head and former Zilla Panchayat member,Sri Munireddy,Milk Dairy President and Sri Muniswami,Milk Dairy Secretary.
Raitha Geethe,”Uluvayogiya Nodalli” was sung by the students.Later, Dr. Krishnamurthy and Dr. Jayanthi spoke about the importance of soil and water,their conservation, maintanence of soil fertility and soil erosion and it’s control measures. Importance of application of micronutrients to the soil was told to the village farmers.
This programme was attended by most farmers of the village and school students.Charts on Soil Sampling and Testing, Integrated Nutrient Management, different methods of composting,site specific nutrient management,Problematic soils and their reclaimation,Soils of India and Karnataka were displayed in the programme.As a part of World Soil Day, quiz,drawing and clay modelling competitions were held for the school students.The winners of these competitions were given prizes.
