A group of enthusiastic students from the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), GKVK, recently conducted a vibrant group discussion on mushroom cultivation with farmers in Chikkonahalli village. The event, held on September 5th, brought together around 20-25 local farmers, creating a platform for knowledge exchange and community engagement. The discussion was part of an ongoing initiative by UAS students to bridge the gap between academic research and practical farming techniques. The session aimed to educate farmers on the potential of mushroom cultivation as a profitable and sustainable agricultural practice.Mushroom cultivation, which requires relatively low investment and can be practiced on a small scale, was highlighted as an alternative income source for farmers.

The students shared insights on various aspects of mushroom farming, including the types of mushrooms suitable for cultivation in the region, substrate preparation, and post-harvest management. They also addressed common challenges such as pest control, moisture management, and marketing strategies. The interaction was not just one-sided; farmers shared their experiences and concerns, contributing to a lively and informative discussion. They expressed interest in adopting mushroom cultivation but also raised questions about the availability of resources and technical support. The students provided guidance and assured them of further assistance through UAS extension services.

As the session concluded, both students and farmers expressed optimism about the future of mushroom cultivation in the region.

The students plan to follow up with more detailed training sessions and workshops to ensure the successful implementation of mushroom farming in Chikkonahalli.

This collaboration between academia and local farming communities exemplifies the positive impact that can be achieved when knowledge is shared and applied at the grassroots level.
