Biotic issues

Ajjawara is currently having a great population of rose, grapes, pomegranate, chrysanthemum, potato. There is severe problems regarding the pest and diseases which reduces the yield inturn the returns to the farmers.

Pomegranate

WiltCeretocytis sp

Symptoms

Affected plants show yellowing in some branches or twigs followed by drooping and drying of leaves and branches. The entire tree dies in few months. Dark greyish brown to black colouration of wood below bark and vascular discoloured bands in the stem and roots.

The typical symptoms of wilt is the partial drying. The bark when removed has the purple discoloration caused by the causal agent called Ceretocytis sp.

Control measures

Avoid over irrigation and untimely irrigation which are the favourable conditions for the pathogen to infect.

Under field conditions soil drenching of affected and adjacent healthy plants with carbendazim or propiconazole (0.2%) + chlorpyriphos (0.2%) has resulted in effective wilt management.

Avoid the irrigated water from reaching other plants or the fields as it acts as the inoculum for the disease spread.

Wilt

Thrips

Symptoms

Thrips are a significant sucking pest in pomegranates. It consumes sensitive shoots and leaves. Thrips severely damage twigs, leaves, blossoms, fruits, and other plant parts through desapping, which diminishes fruit quality and reduces crop yield.

The fruits are damaged by the lacerating action of thrips and the formation of silvery streaks which reduces the market value of the fruit. Later the fruits crack.

Control measures

*Yellow sticky traps can be installed in the field.

*Trunk spray or injection of an effective, systemic, neonicotinoid insecticide can provide relatively rapid control.

*Spray neem oil 1.5ml / l

* Spray delegate having Spinetoram 11.7% SC.
